A Complete Guide to Flyer Sizes and Print Dimensions

Flyer Size

Table of Contents

If you choose the wrong flyer size, it can increase printing costs or cause your message to be overlooked. Great flyer marketing isn’t just about attractive graphics. A flyer that’s too small may leave out important information, while one that’s too large can increase printing costs without delivering better results.

At Signs N Print, we are providing flyer printing services across Perth. So, in this guide, we are going to explain Australia’s standard flyer sizes, their print dimensions, and where each one works best, helping you make a more informed decision before your next print run.

Standard Flyer Sizes and Print Dimensions

Australia follows the ISO A-Series paper standard, alongside the popular DL format. Each size offers a different amount of design space, making it suitable for different marketing campaigns.

Understanding the A-Series Paper Sizes

One reason the A-Series is used worldwide is its consistency. Every sheet is exactly half the size of the previous one.

For example:

  • A3 folds into A4
  • A4 folds into A5
  • A5 folds into A6
  • A6 folds into A7

This makes it incredibly easy to resize artwork while maintaining the same proportions. If you’ve designed an A4 flyer and later decide an A5 version is enough, your layout can usually be adapted without starting from scratch.

DL is the only common flyer size that isn’t part of the A-Series. Measuring 99 × 210mm, it’s exactly one-third of an A4 sheet. That’s why it’s become the go-to choice for Australian direct mail campaigns. It slides neatly into standard DL and C6 envelopes and fits comfortably into most letterboxes without folding.

At Signs N Print, DL and A5 are easily the two flyer sizes our customers request most. DL is great for letterbox marketing and takeaway menus, while A5 gives businesses more space to showcase products, services or event details without overwhelming the reader.

Portrait or Landscape?

Portrait is the standard choice for most flyers because it naturally guides readers from the headline to the call-to-action. It works especially well for DL, A5 and A4 flyers for direct mail, retail promotions and service ads.

Landscape layouts are used for promotional vouchers, table cards, or mini posters where a wider design creates more visual impact. The best orientation will depend on how you want people to read your flyer and how it will be presented.

How to Choose the Perfect Flyer Size for Your Marketing Goals

There isn’t a single “best” flyer size. The Perfect choice depends on what you’re promoting, who you’re targeting, and how your flyers will be distributed. We’ve had fantastic results with A6 flyers and A4 brochures, not because one is better than the other, but because it suited the campaign.

At Signs N Print, we always start by asking one simple question: “What do you want your flyer to do?” The answer usually determines the size long before we talk about paper stock or finishes.

Choose a Size Based on Your Marketing Objective

Think about the purpose of your flyer before you think about the design.

For letterbox drops, DL flyers are hard to beat. They’re specifically designed to fit Australian letterboxes and DL envelopes without folding, making them great for direct mail campaigns. Their long and thin shape is also easy to scan, so readers can rapidly move from headline to offer to your contact data.

You can pick A5 for exhibitions and community promotions. Large enough to hold event schedules, maps, speaker information or promotional offers, but light and portable enough for attendees to carry around.

If you’re planning high-volume handouts, such as retail promotions, cafe inserts or discount vouchers at an affordable price, then A6 flyers are a good choice. They’re cheap to mass produce, small and great for transmitting one simple message.

A4 flyers are great if you need to describe a number of services for your business, highlight products or put in specific pricing. They’re commonly used by professional service providers, educational organisations, and businesses that want to build credibility through more detailed information.

Match the Flyer Size to Your Content

A common mistake is trying to squeeze too much information onto a small flyer.

Every flyer should have a clear visual hierarchy. Your reader should immediately notice:

  • A strong headline.
  • One key message or offer.
  • Supporting information.
  • A clear call-to-action.

If your design starts feeling crowded, that’s usually a sign you need a larger format rather than smaller text.

For example, DL flyers are most effective when they have one bold image, a short title, and a straightforward call-to-action. They are not designed to give long explanations, but to be read quickly.

On the other hand, if you are providing service comparisons, product specs, several promotions, or graphics, then A4 or even A3 provides your content adequate breathing area. More white space is better, generally, for reading.

Our design team helps customers simplify their artwork before recommending a larger size. In many cases, removing unnecessary content creates a stronger flyer than simply increasing the paper size.

Consider How Your Flyers Will Be Distributed

Your distribution method can influence both your printing costs and your campaign’s success.

DL is the most convenient size for direct mail, as it fits in regular envelopes and meets postal criteria, generating the least waste. If you are planning a letterbox campaign across Perth, this format is generally the most efficient solution.

If your team is going to be passing out flyers in crowded streets or shopping centres, A6 and A5 are easier for customers to accept, carry and save. They are less intrusive than larger sizes, yet provide you with room to get your idea across.

Meanwhile, A4 flyers are worth the extra expenditure when they are going to be displayed on reception desks, noticeboards or trade fair displays. Also, because they are more thorough, people are more inclined to keep them as a reference for the future.

At Signs N Print, we’ve produced flyer campaigns ranging from 30 copies for local businesses to print runs exceeding 100,000 pieces. The most successful flyers are not always the biggest, but the ones that have the right size, the right message and the perfect distribution technique.

Flyer Print Specifications Every Business Should Know

Choosing the right flyer size is only half the job. Even the most professional-looking design might look unprofessional if the artwork isn’t set up properly for printing. Poor image quality, missing bleed, or the wrong colour mode can result in blurry prints, unexpected white borders, or colours that don’t match your brand.

Understand Trim Size, Bleed and Safe Area

If you’re supplying artwork to a commercial printer, you’ll often hear three terms: trim size, bleed, and safe area.

  • Trim Size is the final size of your flyer after it’s been cut.
  • Bleed is an extra 3mm of artwork that extends beyond the trim edge. This prevents thin white lines from appearing if the paper shifts slightly during cutting.
  • Safe Area is a margin inside the trim line where all important text, logos, QR codes, and contact details should be placed. Keeping these elements at least 3mm away from the edge reduces the risk of anything being accidentally trimmed off.

These small measurements make a big difference to the finished product. A professionally prepared file always looks cleaner and more polished.

Use the Correct Resolution and Colour Settings

Commercial printing requires much higher image quality than digital screens.

For sharp text and crisp images, your artwork should always be created at 300 DPI (dots per inch) at its final print size. Images downloaded from websites or social media are often only suitable for screen viewing, so they can appear blurry or pixelated when enlarged for print.

Colour settings are just as important.

Computer monitors and cell phones utilise RGB (Red, Green, Blue) to display colours, but professional printers use CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black) inks. If you are sending an RGB file for printing, colours may look different from what you saw on screen.

This is why we would suggest that you send us print-ready PDF files in CMYK colour mode wherever possible. It helps to make sure that the final flyers look as close to your authorised design as feasible.

Choose the Right Paper Weight and Print Finish

The weight of the paper speaks to the feel of your flyer and how it is perceived by your audience.

Signs N Print has a range of paper options to accommodate a variety of campaigns:

  • 130gsm: Great for bulk promotions, mailbox drops and event giveaways where cost is the main concern.
  • 210gsm: A more premium, thicker stock, great for business promotions, product launches and marketing collateral, customers are likely to preserve.
  • 300gsm:  Thick card paper for a premium feel, ideal for luxury brands, high-end marketing and display pieces.

You can also choose between single-sided and double-sided printing.

If you have a short and direct message, then single-sided flyers are a good option. However, if you need more space for a map, price list, event schedule, menu or other product information, then double-sided printing allows you significantly more versatility without increasing the size of the flyer.
